Notifying the SIA: checklist and deadlines
Every person responsible for qualifying premises or a qualifying event must tell the Security Industry Authority. Here is when, what to have ready, and how.
When the duty starts
The start date has not been announced: it will be set by regulations. The Home Office expects it no earlier than April 2027, after an implementation period of at least 24 months from Royal Assent on 3 April 2025.
Deadlines
- Premises — responsible on the start date: within three months beginning on the start date.
- Premises — you become or stop being responsible in those first three months: by the end of the three months, or within 28 days, whichever is later. After that: within 28 days.
- Premises — information you gave becomes inaccurate: within 28 days.
- Events first publicised on or before the start date: within 14 days beginning on the start date.
- Events first publicised later: within 14 days beginning on the day the event date is first made public (website, social media, posters, mailing lists).
- Events — you stop being responsible, or information becomes inaccurate: within 14 days. Events that took place before the start date are not notified.
- Enhanced tier premises and events: the compliance document goes to the SIA as soon as reasonably practicable, and each revised version within 30 days.
How to notify
- Through the SIA’s online notification portal on GOV.UK. The SIA will publish instructions before the duties start; paper and easy-read versions are available on request.
- You can authorise an employee, agent or consultant to submit for you, but the legal duty stays with you. Keep a written record of who is authorised.
- Knowingly or recklessly giving false or misleading information is an offence (section 25).
What to have ready
From the Schedule to the notification regulations. The SIA can ask for more information it reasonably needs.
Track the deadline for each venue
In the venue plan, each venue shows its notification deadline, keeps this checklist ticked, records the date you notified and your SIA reference, and emails you before the deadline.
